It is not at all frequent that we check our ‘other messages’ inbox on Facebook or the ‘DM requests’ box on Instagram. Half of the users don’t have any idea what types of messages do they receive. It can be compliments or something which is similar to ‘cyber bullying’. Sadly, in the past 5 years cyber-bullying has increased by a large percent and it is mostly amongst the teenagers. Sending mean messages via email or texts is the most common way of cyber-bullying at counts up to 35%.
India is said to be the 50th country which is considered as one of the best countries all around the globe for women. The number or rank is not very overwhelming and the reason behind this unappealing rank is the rate of cyber-crimes. Around 78% of women receive vulgar messages and sexually explicit content every week on an average. Lewd messages, sexually explicit texts messages, blank calls from strangers and stalkers are affecting thousands of women across India, according to data collected by Stockholm-based phone number identification app, Truecaller.
Truecaller surveyed over 2,000 women aged between 15 to 35 across 15 Indian cities from January 20 to February 22. The company has studied how such calls and messages impact women. India is Truecaller’s largest market with an estimated 150 million users.
Earlier, reports were more about eve-teasing and stalking of girls and this was highly alarming around the country. But now, almost 1 out 3 women reported receiving sexually explicit messages and cyber threats. These calls are mostly made by strangers who somehow obtain phone numbers and harass women. The report says Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur has the highest instances of such harassing calls on a weekly basis. In Uttar Pradesh, mobile phone numbers of girls are sold for pittance to men who sexually harass them over calls.
