Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Dwarka, has recently discovered a specific species of bats – The Asiatic Yellow House Bat or Scotophilus Kuhlii – to be roosting in Delhi for the very first time. Even though the species has been recorded in Alwar and Bharatpur, it has still not been seen even in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

It is described as a ‘generalist,’ which can inhabit in diverse habitats like tree hollows, building crevices and even moist toilet ducts.

Dr Sumit Dookia, who is an assistant professor at the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and his student Rajlakshmi Mishra,  have discovered a lot of things.

Rajlakshmi has been conducting a long-term study of bats in Delhi since 2014.

The discoveries were recently published in the Journal on New Biological Reports. As of now, the duo Dr Sumit and Rajlaxmi have managed to discover about 10-11 species of bats in various roosting habitats of the national Capital when it was tallied with the 13 found in the last study that had taken place here.

This was in 2007 by a husband-wife scientist duo C Srinivasulu and Bhargavi Srinivasulu. Till now, the duo has rummaged through monuments, caves high rise buildings, trees, etc with special ultrasound instruments that record all their calls.

Well, Dr Dookia also said in an interview:

“We first saw a pregnant female of the species, Lesser Yellow House Bat, in a toilet duct on the third floor of our GGSIPU building. We understood that they have a colony there but couldn’t find a male.”

Dr Dookia also admitted that, due to the fact that these a creatures that fly high, it is very difficult to catch them with even mist nets.
