So, Day 1 of the IPL Auction has been fully wrapped up and we have witnessed some intense bidding wars from all franchises for the players. Team owners spent big to secure their top targets and some have prevailed, while some may feel that a lot of 50/50 chances went against their way.

Players like Stokes, Rashid Khan , KL Rahul win big !

Players like Ben Stokes and Glenn Maxwell were expected to attract a huge amount of money and they did. Stokes was the highest earner at 12.5 Cr whereas Maxwell was snapped up by Delhi for 9 Cr.

Gautam Gambhir and Ravichandran Ashwin were not retained by their respective franchises and it was expected that their former employers would get them at a relatively low cost by activating the RTM. But ,Gambhir headed home to Delhi for 2.$ Cr. while Ashwin will don the Kings XI jersey, fetching a total of 7.6 Cr.

RR and KXIP had an intense bidding war in their persuit of Afghan spinner Rashid Khan. Punjab had the last laugh though, securing his services for 9 Cr.

Lets have a look at each team, where they stand, whom they have bought and how much is left in their kitty.

1) Chennai Super Kings

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 11

AMOUNT SPENT : 30 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 17 Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : KARN SHARMA, IMRAN TAHIR, AMBATI RAYUDU, KEDAR JADHAV, SHANE WATSON, DWAYNE BRAVO, HARBHAJAN SINGH, DU PLESSIS, MS DHONI, RAVINDRA JADEJA.

Chennai bought in some quality spinners in Tahir, Karn Sharma and Bhajji which makes a strong spin department. Batting looks solid with the inclusion of Shane Watson and the return of Faf du Plessis. Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav will give steel to the middle order. They are at a healthy position right now and the CSK camp must be all smiles.

2) Royal Challengers Bangalore

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 14

AMOUNT SPENT : 33.1 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 15.9 Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : NAVDEP SAINI, ANIKET CHOWDHARY,  KULWANT KHEJROLIYA, MANAN VOHRA, YUZVENDRA CHAHAL, UMESH YADAV, QUINTON DE. KOCK, MOEEN ALI, COLIN DE GRANDHOMME, CHRIS WOAKES, BRENDON MCCULUM, VIRAT KOHLI, AB DE VILLIERS SARFARAZ KHAN.

The auction didnt go that well for the men in red and black. They got the seasoned big hitter in Brendon McCulum and  a quality wk batsman in de Kock, but otherwise their acquisitions look ordinary. They will hope for a better day 2. Moeen ALi and Chahal were their top picds and their spin in the Bangalotre wicket will prove handy.

3) Delhi Daredevils

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 15

AMOUNT SPENT : 34.7 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 12.3 Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : AVESH KHAN, HARSHAL PATEL, VIJAY SHANKAR, RAHUL TEWATIA, PRITHVI SHAW, AMIT MISHRA, KAGISO RABADA, MD SHAMI, COLIN MUNRO, JASON ROY, RISHABH PANT, CHRIS MORRIS, SHREYAS IYER

The Daredevils always seem to spend big and they do. But, they dont spend wisely. This time, they almost have the same squad as of last year. The biggest highlight was the homecoming of Gautam Gambhir and the arrival of crowd puller Glen Maxwell.  They have a good pace attack and a strong batting line up but need good squad players who can fill in in the absence of others.

4) Mumbai Indians

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 9

AMOUNT SPENT : 32.2 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 15.$ Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : ISHAN KISHAN, KRUNAL PANDYA, SK YADAY, PAT CUMMINS, M. RAHMAN, K. POLLARD, ROHIT SHARMA, HARDIK PANDYA, JASPRIT BUMRAH.

They had a conservative approach, retaining their previous stars and investing in fresh faces like SK Yadav, promising Ishan Kishan, but otherwise they need to build a good squad. With only 9 men bought lots of work is left for Nita Ambani’s outfit.

5) Kolkata Knight Riders

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 12

AMOUNT SPENT : 51.4 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 7.6 Cr.

Kolkata maintained a low profile today. They spent big on Mitchell starc and Chris Lynn. Otherwise they had a dissappointing auction. Nitish Rana was an extremely smart buy but they lack a leader in the squad. All they need are pacders and a reliable middle order.

6) Rajasthan Royals

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 9

AMOUNT SPENT : 44 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 23.5 Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : JOFRA ARCHER, DARCY SHORT, RAHUL TRIPATHI, JOS BUTTLER, SANJU SAMSON, STUART BINNY, AJINKYA RAHANE, BEN STOKES, STEVE SMITH.

They started with a bang, buying Ben Stokes for a whopping 12.5 Cr. They bought their previous players like Rahane and Binny. Rahul Tripathi will laugh all the way to the bank as he was boiught for 3.4 Cr. Jos Buttler is a versatile player and he is an excellent addition to an otherwise strong lineup. They have the money and just need to spend wisely in all departments.

7) Kings XI Punjab

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 10

AMOUNT SPENT : 45.6 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 21.9 Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : A.RAJPOOT, M. AGARWAL, MARCUS STOINIS, AARON FINCH, DAVID MILLER, KL RAHUL, KARUN NAIR, YUVRAJ SINGH, RAVI ASHWIN, AXAR PATEL.

Punjab were very active in the auction. They made thier intentions clear with the purchase of Karun Nair, Yuvi and Miller. Finch is a superb buy and Mayank Agarwal will also vy for the opening spot. They have spent wisely and all they need now is a good pace attack. Ravi Ashwin was the best coup of the lot, fetching 7.6 Cr

8) Sunrisers Hyderabad

PLAYERS BOUGHT : 16

AMOUNT SPENT : 51 Cr.

FUNDS LEFT : 8 Cr.

SQUAD TILL NOW : KHALEEL AHMED, BASIL THAMPI, T NATARANJAN, DEEPAK HOODA, RICKY BHUI, RASHID KHAN, W SAHA, Y. PATHAN, C BRATHWAITE, MANISH PANDEY, K. WILLIAMSON, SHIKHAR DHAWAN, DAVID WARNER,  BHUVANESHWAR KUMAR.

Tom Moody has done a great job in securing players. Manish Pandey,  Deepak Hooda, Carlos Brathwaite are strong additions. They activated the RTM on Dhawan which was a good move. They got  Basil Thampi and Rashid KHan both of whom have performed excellently last year. W. Saha was bought for a mammoth 5  crores and his wit and batting flair will be a welcome boost to the Sunrisers camp. Yusuf Pathan was bought to strenghten the middle order and his experience will be key.  SRH look a balanced unit and will surely walk out being today’s winners.
