Vinesh Phogat strikes gold at Asian Games 2018, Twitter call for ‘Dangal’

India’s Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal and the country’s fifth medal at the ongoing 2018 Asian Games on Monday. Phogat got the better of Japan’s Yuki Irie in Women’s Freestyle 50 kg gold medal match. With the win, she also became the first female gold medal winner at the Asiad.

It was a contest completely dominated by the Indian, who took a 4-0 lead initially and then stretched it further to pocket the yellow metal. Phogat staged a classic performance in her semi-final match against Daulatbike Yakshimuratova of Uzbekistan, as the referees took just 75 seconds to declare the Indian the winner by technical superiority (10-0).

The Indian was quick to take a 4-0 lead by pinning the Japanese grappler down in the early stages of the match. She did well to hold on to her 4-0 lead at the end of the first three minutes. The 2014 Incheon Asiad bronze medallist took two more points at the end to clinch gold by a margin of 6-2.

Wishes flowed in on Twitter for Vinesh Phogat as this is a very proud moment for the whole country. Many are even quoting dialogues from the 2016 film Dangal, which is based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained daughters Geeta and Babita (Vinesh’s cousins) to be world-class wrestlers.

Here are some of the tweets:

Congratulations, Vinesh Phogat. The nation is proud of you.
