We saw a thrilling night of Champions League action yesterday when Liverpool and AS Roma made it to the semi-finals in style. Liverpool did not have that much of trouble beating Manchester City but the real surprise came from Italian side AS Roma who did the impossible shocking fans from all over the world. Eusebio di Francesco’s side quite unexpectedly defeated Barcelona 3-0 which helped them progress to the next round via away goals rule.
Now, coming to the two matches today, Bayern Munich hosted Sevilla and Juventus visited the Santiago Bernabeu in the hope of booking a semi-final place.
German giants Bayern Munich had the advantage moving into the second leg as they earlier beat Sevilla 1-2 away. However, the Allianz Arena witnessed a close encounter between the two sides this time around as both of them failed to break the deadlock after 90 minutes of action which took the home side into the next round.
In the other game, Real Madrid had a brilliant advantage over Juventus as they humiliated the Italian side in the first leg netting 3 goals without a reply. But this is football and you cannot predict the outcome till the final whistle is blown.
A determined Juventus team came to the Santiago Bernabeu hoping to do what AS Roma did to Barcelona. They played excellent football as Mario Mandzukic scored twice in the first half leaving the Real Madrid players in shock.
The second half was no different as Blaise Matuidi struck again for Juventus and all of a sudden Juventus looked like the team who would go through. It seemed that the game certainly would go to extra time but deep in stoppage time, a foul on Lucas Vasquez in the penalty box earned Real Madrid a much-needed spot kick. The decision did not go down well with Buffon who opposed the referee strongly ended up being sent off the field.
And it was once again Cristiano Ronaldo who rescued the Euro kings as he brilliantly placed the ball in the top corner to give his team the vital aggregate lead.
So the 4 teams who progressed to the semis are Real Madrid, AS Roma, Liverpool and Bayern Munich with the semi-final draw still to be decided. The tournament is getting all the more exciting as it progresses and we hope for such scintillating football action in the next round too.
