The Royal Festival Hall on Monday night saw Croatian midfielder Luka Modric win the FIFA Best Men’s player title for 2018. For the past 10 years, it was Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who have been getting their hands on the award but Modric changed the whole scenario with his scintillating performance for Croatia and Real Madrid.
The Croatian came in ahead of Ronaldo (19 percent), Mohamed Salah (11.2 percent), Kylian Mbappe (10 percent) and Messi (9 percent).
“This award is not just mine. It is my teammates’ from Real Madrid and Croatia. Without my coaches, I would not have won this and without my family, I would not be the player I am today”
The winner was decided by a process in which captains and managers of nations from around the world were asked to pick three players for the award – First (5 points), Second (3 points) and Third (1 point).
Messi finished outside the top three for the first time since 2006 and the Argentine chose Modric and Mbappe ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in his personal list. However, Messi gave his arch-rival the third position.
England skipper Harry Kane went with Ronaldo as his best pick, followed by Messi and De Bruyne.
Meanwhile, Indian record goalscorer and captain Sunil Chhetri nominated Modric for the award besides selecting Mbappe (second) and De Bruyne (third).
We certainly feel that Modric deserved the award more than both Messi and Ronaldo for his exceptional performance for both club and country. Let us know what you guys think.
