France beat Croatia to lift the World Cup for the second time in their history
It was the World Cup final in Moscow, and it delivered what it promised. The world got to witness the high drama, action, goals and most importantly some beautiful football. Two brilliant teams France and Croatia locked horns at the Luzhniki stadium and the match could not have been better. But in the end there could be just winner, only one team lifting the World Cup trophy and it was France.
It was a scintillating contest between two sides who have seen off all the obstacles thrown at them to reach the all-important final. But France had the last laugh in the contest which saw six goals scored in the 90 minutes with the Frenchmen running away 4-2 winners.
Croatia had a bad start to the game as Mario Mandzukic put the ball into his own net handing the lead to the French side. But the underdogs came back well to level the score through Ivan Perisic whose left foot has been a joy to watch in this World Cup. France’s lead was restored when Antoine Griezmann scored from the spot on the 38-minute mark. Soon after France added their third and fourth through Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe and the later became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele did it in 1958.
Croatia, who have impressed throughout the World cup, got a second goal but it was not enough in the end. After 20 years, France are once again the World Champions but you got to feel for the Croatian team whose determined efforts were something to witness this time in Russia.
This World Cup has been one of the best ever with some surreal moments and big teams failing to live up to the mark. But taking nothing away from France, they deserved the trophy more than anyone else and have displayed some thrilling football over the course of the tournament. To end it, we can surely say it is going to be a long night in Paris.
