The supreme court had been asked to recheck its decision in a review plea. The convicts are basically left with just one more legal option of challenging their sentence before they appeal to the President for mercy.

“There is no new material to review our order”, said three judges led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, on the review petition of Mukesh who is 29, Pawan Gupta who is 22 and Vinay Sharma who is 23. Akshay Kumar Singh who is 31, the fourth death row convict, has not filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s judgement in the month of May, last year.

“We have faith in justice and the Supreme Court”

The Supreme Court of the Delhi High Court had sentenced the four men to death for having raped the young woman who died about 16 days after the terrifying physical and sexual assault.

The Supreme Court, in its judgment, has said that the “brutal, barbaric and diabolic nature” of the crime could create a “tsunami of shock” to destroy a society that is civilised. The convicts apparently appealed to the court, asking the court to review their sentence, saying that it was “cold-blooded killing in the name of Justice”. The court agreed to hear their request in November, a year back from now.

The gang-rape and murder of the 23-year-old student on the 16th of December, 2012, led the entire nation into a rage and utter shock and disbelief which led to big changes to laws on sexual crimes against women.

Among the six accused, the bus driver Ram Singh had killed himself in his prison cell. The youngest accused was just a few days short of being 18 when he committed the crime and hence, was sent to a juvenile home and was released from there after a three-year term.

The woman was then referred to as “Nirbhaya”, meaning fearless. According to her parents, all the rapists should be hanged as soon as possible, which includes the youngest.

Now that justice is finally being served after about 5 years, what are your thoughts on this? Do let us know.
