No more kidnappings in Bollywood as our favourite Maruti Omni set to be discontinued
As soon as we think of the kidnapping scenes in Bollywood, the image of the car that pops up in our minds is of the Maruti Omni. We have all witnessed scenes in Bollywood where a Maruti Omni suddenly comes from nowhere, the door opens and the target is skillfully forced into the car completing a thrilling kidnapping sequence.
But as we know, everything comes to an end. And soon the tenure of the Maruti Omni will come to an end as confirmed by Maruti Suzuki. They have exclusively confirmed to NDTV’s carandbike that the Omni will not make it beyond October 2020, when the Bharat New Vehicles Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) will be enforced.
Speaking to NDTV carandbike, R C Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India said that the Maruti Omni, which has been a very important model for them over the years cannot be made ready to meet the upcoming safety norms and thus they have decided to discontinue it.
“There are certain models that cannot be made ready to meet the upcoming safety norms and we will have to discontinue them, Maruti Omni being one of them. The Maruti 800 was a very important model for us but we had to discontinue it, in a similar manner we will also discontinue the Omni.”
The present design of Maruti Omni cannot be modified to adhere to the new crash norms. It cannot be fitted with crumple zones to absorb the impact in case of a collision. The Maruti Omni that was launched back in 1984 when many of us were not even born, has been used by countless people in the country. The memories of the car are still fresh in our minds and we will have a tough time moving on from the model for sure.
