India’s 2nd International Cherry Blossom festival is happening in Shillong and the pictures will leave you spellbound

We all have heard about the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan, haven’t we? Cherry Blossom, popularly known as ‘sakura’ in Japan, holds a great significance in the Japanese culture for hundreds of years now. The blooming of the cherry blossom trees signifies the beauty and fragility of life. It paints the city in the colors of white and pink, giving an essence of good life and beautifying the surroundings. The sakura usually starts blooming from January/February and continues till the end of May. The major cities of Japan naming Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, there cherry blossom is set in early April.

Cherry Blossom is a major attraction for the tourists in Japan from early April to mid-June. In this festival, families gather and admire the blooming of the ‘sakura’ by arranging family picnics and also, attending the Cherry Blossom Festival where there are music-performances, food stalls and other fun attractions. Currently it is distributed in the temperate zones of Northern Hemisphere including Taiwan, Korea, China, West Siberia, Iraq, India, Canada and the United States.

FUN FACT : We don’t have to fly all over to Japan to admire the beautiful sakura trees.


Shillong in Meghalaya will be hosting India’s 2nd International Cherry Blossom festival from 8-11 November 2017. It is being organized by the Meghalaya government  in association with the Institute of Bio-resources and sustainable development (BSD), Imphal and the Indian Institute of Cultural Relations. There will be stalls installed showcasing wine, arts and craft of the region and also, guided night-walks under the illuminated cherry-blossom trees. Tourist and other visitors are suggested to try the fruits wines made from plums and blackberries, savoured with smoked pork and fish delicacies. Mouth watering, isn’t it?

Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma told the Shillong Times, “The government has planted thousands of cherry blossom trees which are lined up inside beautiful bamboo tree guards for protection”. The Cherry Blossom festival will be celebrated in the Khashi Hills and it will definitely be a sight worth the beauty and time.
